What is a consumer unit?

A consumer unit is the funnel of all wiring systems. An electrical consumer unit distributes electricity through fuses to direct circuit areas of your building, whether it be your home, office or commercial unit.

When it comes to consumer units over the years requirements have changed considerably. The most recent consumer units – the rewireable type, provide protection against overcurrent and short-circuits, as well as protection from electric shocks.

Under the new IET Wiring Regulations, BS 7671:2018 consumer units are now manufactured from non-combustible materials, meaning your consumer unit will contain a fire, if it was to set a-light, in turn lowering the risk of fire spreading.

Circuit protection and your protection

With our installation packages, we install circuit protective devices to protect the overall circuits. Typically, there is a main switch which serves as an isolation device only, meaning it does not offer any electrical protection. However, the main switch can be used in an emergency to isolate the whole installation. The additional security with a consumer unit is through it having fuses, it provides protection against overcurrent and short-circuit faults.

As well as circuit protection, having a consumer unit installed additionally protects the user from an electric shock under, Residual Current Device (RCD). We at Marble M&E Group on installation, supply two RCDs to protect a number of circuits within the installation, preventing danger or inconvenience to the user in the event of a fault.
